A green oasis in the bustling center of Athens
The National Garden, just behind the Greek Parliament, is a lush green haven in the center of Athens and along with Zappeion Megaron, they open their gates for visitors from sunrise to sunset, to experience a walk through history. Zappeion and the National Garden were once the Old Palace and the Royal Gardens; the personal paradise of Queen Amalia and King Otto.
The Garden used to have 500 different species of plants and many exotic animals, but the Mediterranean climate was not suitable for most of them to survive. The Gardens are ideal for you to spend a peaceful evening walking among the flowers, the trees and plants from Greece and all over the world, resting beside the beautiful lake, watching the animals at the small zoo, and even admiring some ancient ruins, mosaics, and columns.
As you stroll in the National Gardens, a path will eventually get you to Zappeion Megaron, one of the most significant buildings in the modern history of Athens. It was erected by Danish architect Theophilus Hansen in 1888 and funded by Evangelos Zappa, a national benefactor, philanthropist, and businessman.The architecture of the building follows the neoclassical style with a Corinthian influence. Together with the stone bridge of the Ilissos river, which was also built with the sponsorship of Evangelos Zappas, and the surrounding gardens, they were symbolic of the aura of Athens in the early 20th century.
Today, Zappeion Megaron is used as a conference and exhibition center for public and private functions. There is also an outdoor historical cinema and a cafe-bar on the premises. Being next to Syntagma station, the Zappeion Megaron and the National Garden are easily accessible.
